This course explores fragrance, purity, and sensory experience in Islamic culture, introducing participants to the ways in which fragrance is woven into faith, the body, space, and everyday life. Drawing on the Qur’an, Hadith, and broader Islamic cultural traditions, the course examines the imagery of fragrance, practices of purity and prayer, and the roles of scent in personal, spatial, and hospitality traditions. Through an introduction to aromatic materials such as agarwood, frankincense, musk, rose, and orange blossom, participants will experience Islamic culture through classical texts, cultural practices, and the senses, while exploring diverse cultural perspectives on the body, everyday life, and care.
The course combines a pre-recorded online core module with in-person sessions. The 3-hour core module, From Body to Care: A Cross-Cultural Perspective on Medical Humanities, provides a foundation for understanding cultural perspectives on the body, medicine, and care. This is followed by 12 hours of in-person instruction exploring Islamic texts and cultural traditions, as well as Arabian fragrance culture and aromatic materials through sensory experience.
